An integrative and compassionate teaching approach.
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching style is integrative and culturally responsive to the needs of the students. I promote a “power-with” as opposed to a “power-over” class environment in which collective narratives can be voiced and agentic learning can be experienced. In this way, a trauma-informed stance is cultivated.
“I truly enjoyed this class and it is evident that Professor Johnson cared about us as students. It was evident that she had a strong grasp on the material. This was one of the few classes where we had a mental health check and we learned tips for managing our health in different environments…Overall, great class, I have recommend[ed] to others.”

Mental Health in Organizations
This course focuses on the interplay between organizational practices, management behaviors, and the mental health of employees. We examine mental health from a person-in-environment perspective to understand how systemic oppression, workplace norms and values, and social role expectations impact the job performance and well-being of varying identity groups. Students can expect to participate in discussions on evidence-based organizational and individual interventions to create social equity and improve the mental health and well-being of employees, with consideration for marginalized workers. In addition, students engage in experiential therapeutic activities to cultivate self-healing which can also be used as a guide to restorative health for others. This can help in managing mental health challenges in the role of a student as well as along their career journey.
